Storm-Proof Your Driveway & Retaining Wall
Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November, and the busiest stretch falls between mid-August and early October. Long Island rarely takes a direct hit, but it doesn't need one. The outer bands of a tropical system can drop three or four inches of rain in an afternoon, and that's usually enough to expose every drainage shortcut on a property.
Driveways and retaining walls are where the damage shows up first. Both are built to handle water. Neither is built to handle water that has nowhere to go.
Why Retaining Walls Fail During Heavy Rain
A retaining wall holds back soil. The trouble starts when it's asked to hold back soil and water at the same time.
Water weighs about 62 pounds per cubic foot. Saturate the ground behind a wall and the load doesn't just get heavier, it changes character. Dry soil leans on a wall. Saturated soil pushes like a liquid, working into every joint and seam looking for a way out. Engineers call it hydrostatic pressure, and it's the single most common reason walls fail on Long Island.
The usual culprits behind that pressure:
- No drainage stone behind the wall. Backfilling straight against the block with native soil traps water.
- Missing or clogged weep holes. Water needs an exit at the base of the wall.
- No drain pipe. A perforated pipe in gravel at the footing carries water away rather than letting it pool.
- Shallow or uncompacted base. The wall settles unevenly and joints open.
- No geogrid on taller walls. Above roughly four feet, walls need reinforcement tied back into the soil.
Warning Signs Worth Acting On Now

Walls almost always announce failure before it happens. Walk the property on a dry day and look for:
- Bulging or bowing in the middle sections
- The top course leaning forward past the base
- Stair-step cracks running through mortar joints
- Blocks that have shifted out of alignment
- Soil, mulch, or gravel washed out on the high side
- Water seeping through the face after rain, which means it isn't draining where it should
One or two of these signals a repair. Several together usually mean the wall needs rebuilding, and it's far cheaper to do that on your schedule than after it comes down.
How Storm Water Damages a Driveway
Driveway problems from heavy rain are less dramatic and easier to miss. The damage happens underneath.
- Edge erosion. Runoff cuts along the unsupported shoulder and undermines the pavement from the side.
- Base washout. Water traveling under the surface carries away the fine material holding the stone base together, leaving voids.
- Ponding. Standing water sits on low spots, soaks into hairline cracks, and expands during the first freeze.
- Sediment deposits. Silt washing across the surface clogs joints in paver driveways and stains asphalt.
- Settlement at the apron. The transition to the street takes the most traffic and the most water at once.

Drainage Upgrades That Prevent the Damage
Most storm damage traces back to water moving somewhere it shouldn't. Fixing the path is cheaper than repeatedly fixing the result.
- Regrade the surface. A driveway should carry water toward the street or a planted area, never toward the garage or the foundation.
- Install a trench drain. A channel drain across the base of a sloped driveway intercepts runoff before it reaches the garage door.
- Add a catch basin and dry well. Low areas that hold water need somewhere to send it. Sandy soil across much of Holtsville makes dry wells effective here.
- Extend downspouts. Roof water dumped next to a retaining wall or driveway edge is a common and completely avoidable cause of failure.
- Consider permeable pavers. Open-graded joints let rain pass through the surface instead of running across it.
- Clear the weep holes. Ten minutes with a screwdriver and a hose restores drainage on many older walls.

Before the next system tracks up the coast, run through this:
- Clear leaves and debris from catch basins, channel drains, and weep holes.
- Check that downspout extensions still discharge well away from hardscapes.
- Photograph any existing cracks or leaning sections so you can compare afterward.
- Move planters, furniture, and anything else that could sit against a wall and trap water.
- Cut back overhanging limbs that could drop and load a wall or a fresh driveway surface.

Give the ground a day or two to drain, then walk the property with your before photos.
- Has any section of wall moved, tilted, or opened at the joints?

- Are there new gullies, exposed stone, or washed-out soil lines?
- Does the driveway edge feel soft or hollow underfoot?
- Have any pavers or stones settled below the surrounding surface?
A wall that shifted during one storm will shift further during the next. That's the point to call rather than the point to wait.
Repairs Are Easier Before the Season Peaks
Contractor schedules on Long Island compress quickly once a named storm shows up on the forecast. Everyone calls the same week. Handling drainage and wall work in advance means proper diagnosis, correct materials, and a crew that isn't triaging emergencies.
It also means the work is done right. Rebuilding a wall with drainage stone, a perforated pipe, compacted base, and reinforcement takes planning that doesn't happen well under pressure.
